Modern Amenities

Excellent accommodations for the price. Ample space. Nice contemporary furnishings and clean. The only real downer was the internet connection. We called to get it looked at but there was no change all weekend long. It was the slowest and most unpredictable connection...felt like a slow dial up from the 90's. That was disappointing as we rely on the computer for all our outings (restaurant selection, weather, etc). Also, the gym only has three cardio machines and my husband and I were outpaced by another couple who entered at the same time and literally ran to the treadmill and elliptical to beat us so we did not work out. -Cynthia Aherne , from Nyack, United States - 10/19/2009
Nice Rooms, Poor Customer Service

We were very pleased with our room. We booked through Perfect Escapes and got a free room upgrade to a remodeled room with a view of the river. When we checked in we were told we had a late check out and to call and tell them what time we wanted to check out. When we called we were told late checkout was 1:00 and we would be charged $70 if we checked out later. I asked that they please tell people when they check in if there is a specific late checkout time and received a blank look from both the staff and manager who were standing at the counter. Others in our party (we had 5 rooms total) had similar experiences with the staff – they just don’t seem to care. A simple smile and ‘ok I’ll pass that along’ was all I was looking for but apparently that was not part of the package. Nice hotel, good location but it’s hard to get excited about a hotel when they treat customers with such disdain. -Bree, from San Francsico, United States - 9/23/2009

Was not very satisfied with my stay. The property seemed cramped and the public area was tiny. The hotel personnel seemed distracted or simply just didn't care. The only positive was the location. -Shirley, from Attica, United States - 7/21/2009

Location on the river was perfect. The view out our window was outstanding- Could see river & much of the city. Hotel staff helpful & courteous. Had a great stay. Only downside was finding a soda machine(1 in entire hotel). Also it is $43.00 a day parking, which is about the same anywhere in the vicinity- but keep that in mind. -Kathy Frazier , from Brookfield, United States - 7/2/2009

Room was worn. Cleaning staff was very noisy in the morning, slamming doors and yelling at each other in hallway. Not all elevators working. In construction. -Elane Hamer , from San Diego, United States - 6/24/2009
Perfect Place in Chicago

My husband and I stayed here with our family over a long weekend and absolutely loved it. This hotel has a perfect location in downtown and the rooms have stunning views. The hotel staff was wonderful and we would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Chicago. We got an unbelievable rate during the weekend and couldn't be happier. -Kristin, from Irvine, United States - 5/19/2009

Happy Campers!

Great location- within walking distance of all major sites & overlooking river. No breakfast room but bakery around the corner where you can breakfast. Internet facilities. Staff very helpful - receptionist helped us with flight check ins when internet was down & made reservations at restaurant. Rooms very clean, spacious, lots of light, big windows - and had a filter coffee maker. Perfect. Only niggle was on arrival we found our room had no bath even though we had specifically booked a king room with bath and was under the impression that we were paying the price we were for these extras. On query with reception we were upgraded instantly to room with bath on higher floor with river views (but with smaller bed). We were told that if booked that all booking details were not guaranteed, hence no bath but as a courtesy to us they were upgrading us. However I had understood on booking that the higher price was for the bath and the king bed... -Colma, from Lancaster Quay, Ireland - 3/31/2009
My First Visit At Hotel 71
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
I only stayed at Hotel 71 for one night, simply because it's not worth the price in my honest opinion.
The view is excellent and the people are nice but the room and facilities are not all that.
The lobby is very small, there is a lot of construction being done and the room is not all that... don't expect a designer's bathroom, I didn't see one. The TV is old and not flat as I'd expect from such a hotel and I'm reluctant to add.
However I wasn't too disappointed as the view is breath-taking and this was my first visit to the windy city, which was a blessed one. -Moran Lankry , from Ramle, Israel - 10/16/2008
Great Stay

Great spot for a night at the theater. Large room after free upgrade, plus huge bathroom and real (though not large) closet. Spend a few extra dollars for the river view - well worth it. No problems with elevator frequency (they're being upgraded), but try not to get a room next to the older one, as it's a little noisy. Valet parking at $43 is a bit high compared to a self-park one block away, but it's in the building, and with unlimited in and out it's a pretty good value. Overall, a very nice hotel at a decent price: we paid just under $200 plus about 15% tax for a Friday night in September. Would definitely stay again. -Phil, from Villa Park, United States - 9/10/2008

I was very pleased with Hotel 71! A great location and a fabulous room have me coming back in November. This was truly one of the nicest, largest hotel rooms I have stayed in! I was especially thrilled with the bathroom! Very large with TWO sink vanities, a separate tub and large glass rainforest shower and a small plasma TV! Also the staff was pleasant and helpful! -Jacquie Gerblick , from Clarkston, United States - 6/20/2008

Met My Expectations
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
The rooms were beautifully decorated with lovely amenities and a gorgeous city and river view. The location was excellent, right near the Miracle Mile, convenient to the bus or train, and with plenty of cabs all around. I felt safe walking to the nightlife a few blocks away. Staff and concierge were super helpful, too. -Lanette, from Amherst, United States - 4/14/2008

Everything Is Bad
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
I stayed for 2 days, and it was awful!!!
The room was tiny, no restaurant, mini bar was empty, staff was very mean, elevator was broken. Also, I left my digital camera in the room. I called to the hotel to check 10 mins after leaving my room, they said there was no digital camera in the room. The way he spoke was very mean and rude. All my pictures that I took in Chicago are gone!
The pictures about this hotel that I saw online were totally different!
Don't go to this hotel, you will waste your money. -Sul Hee, from Windsor, Canada - 3/2/2008
Excellent Location & Service
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
Great location for exploring Chicago - easy access to transport links for area attractions, walking distance to theatres & shopping. Great value to moderate & upscale dining spots close by (< 5 min walk). B'fast & light supper dining < $15/2 people.
Exceptionally large rooms - comfy beds & roomy bathroom. Enough room to add couch, fridge, sink which would be good for stays > 1 night. Views on river side were fantastic!
Parking was easy.
Staff was knowledgeable, friendly & very helpful. Housekeeping was good - rooms & facilities were kept clean & maintenance issues were promptly & professionally dealt with.
Only issue was elevators - 1 elevator to hotel rooms was very slow - long waits during peak periods.
Good value for $ in the city & I'd definitely recommend this hotel to others & would stay here again especially if fridges were added & elevators were faster. -Kellie Jackson, from Calgary, Canada - 10/30/2007
