Overview
Located in the heart of Chicago on historic State Street, the Hotel Burnham projects an atmosphere of historical and whimsy devoted to the hotels theme of romance. Completed in 1895, as the Reliance Building, it was one of the first steel framed skyscrapers in the world. Dark finished mahogany wood, rich colored leathers and silk drapery unite to recreate the men's club atmosphere that once occupied this space. Tumbled stone flooring in the entry lobby compliment the restored stone floor used in the original lobby. Swans mated for life swim in the corridor carpet design of our guestroom floors. Cherubs adorn the guestroom bedding adding to the romance theme. Expansive windows feature incredible views of downtown Chicago are draped in handsome blue velvet and tie back panels with samplings of Mozart's symphonies.

Midnight Construction
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
We were not informed that there was construction scheduled right outside our window for all night long. Jack hammers, large steel I-beams being unloaded- loud vibrations felt- all night long. The front desk said their web-site had full disclosure of the construction, but we did not book through their web-site, in fact we even called the hotel directly during booking. No mention was ever made that a good night's rest might be challenging, much less impossible. The parent company of the hotel, Kimpton, owns three hotels in Chicago that all offer eco-friendly travel, and accommodate pets; that we couldn't have been referred to a sister hotel where there was no construction scheduled is a disservice to its customer base. The staff was friendly but the corporate policies prevented them from communicating the problem of the construction, so we had no idea, until the jack hammers had fired up after midnight. We were treated like chumps. Shame on Kimpton Group and Michael Depatie. -Theodore Sampson , from Raleigh, United States - 8/26/2008
Fun Stay

Nicely situated in a very busy part of Chicago-so beware of noisy streets. Beautifully restored historical building right across from the historic Marshal Field's original store. 15 min walk to Michigan ave shops, but 3 blocks away from Millennium park and art museum. Lovely place overall. -Yulia, from Milwaukee, United States - 5/14/2008
Hotel Burnham
 | | Overall rating: | | Value rating : | |
I was born and raised in Chicago, but never spent a night in a downtown hotel. This was my first experience and I was not disappointed. I had just finished reading the book "The Devil in the White City" which was about the Chicago 1893 Exposition that Burnham helped to plan and organize. So to stay in a hotel that he designed in the 1890's was great! The staff was friendly. It is located on State Street so it was close to many attractions, stores and restaurants. We were on the 7th floor, but could hear city traffic and noises, but could not hear people in other rooms. I would recommend it and the price through Perfect Escapes was great! -Robert, from Bartlett, United States - 5/11/2008

We stayed one night in this hotel but would stay again for an extended time. Its location near shopping and theater can't be beat. The service was excellent, all staff very helpful and friendly.

Valet Parking

The valet parking was very expensive and I had to wait almost 2 hours to get my car. This was the worst part of my stay. -Grace Smith, from Merrillville, United States - 11/29/2007
