Overview
Wharekauhau is a 5000 acre rural retreat on the south east coast of New Zealand's North Island. With private native forest, spectacular beaches, rivers, lakes and wetlands, Wharekauhau is a haven from the outside world.
Luxury hotel with award winning style - at home and internationally - Wharekauhau is recognised as one of the world's exclusive retreats. The Lodge is the heart of Wharekauhau. Modelled on an Edwardian country mansion.
Luxury accommodation at Wharekauhau is provided in self-contained cottages. Designed for privacy and comfort, they are perfect for honeymooners. Dotted throughout the estate, the cottages house Wharekauhau's guest suites and offer superb ocean views.
Natural materials are used throughout the guest suites, including clay tiles, pebble mosaics, plastered walls, rich New Zealand wool carpeting, cotton bed linen and hemp curtains.
Wharekauhau's menu changes to reflect the seasons and features New Zealand classics such as rack of lamb, venison, pigeon breast, crab broth and crayfish. Local flavours are a highlight - with an award winning selection of local wines, including Palliser Estate, Ata Rangi, Martinborough Vineyard and Murdoch James. Kapiti cheese and Olivo extra virgin olive oil are just a few examples of local produce used. We also offer organic produce, including a range of refreshing organic beers.

Directions:
From The North:
A 1.5 hour scenic drive northeast of Wellington.
Drive from Wellington along State Highway 2 through the Hutt Valley, then to Featherston. Upon entering Featherston, turn right down Western Lake Road.
Wharekauhau is 40km from this turn. Note Helicopter transfers are available.
Ten minutes from Wellington.
Transportation:
HELICOPTER TRANSFER FROM WELLINGTON TO WHAREKAUHAU IS ONLY A 12 MINUTE TRIP. These can be prebooked with the lodge and are weather dependent
Transportation from Primary Airport to Property Taxi - As Wellington is 105 kilometres from Wharekauhau, whilst taxis are available, prebooking of transfers would be preferred Limo - Private Transfers from Wellington to Wharekauhau can be arranged and are based on what size car is needed for the passengers and luggage, for instance sedan or previa van Rental Car Wellington Airport has a number of rental car providers including Hertz, Avis, and various others. Rail or Subway Guests can catch the train from Wellington Main Station to Featherston which is 45 minutes from the lodge. Transport from Featherston station to the lodge must be prebooked as there is not a taxi stand at the station.
